If you’re looking for the ultimate in road trip tips for families, I love the list provided by Quirky Momma: Kids Activities Blog.
One of the genius ideas on there is car pulley system. The system they described is a bucket pulley system, but since I couldn’t see any pics, we improvised.
Sam tests it out before hitting the road. You can’t hang much on clothespins but since I get motion sickness if I look backwards, they can at least use this method to show me pics they’ve drawn, etc. Next time we’re trying the bucket method!
It’s that time of year, so I’m gathering all the road trip tips I can! Here’s one from a good friend that we will SO be using!
Make a copy of the mapped route you will be using for each kid. Highlight the path and use it to challenge them to figure out where they are, by themselves, using the map and signs.
Place a star at locations that you know you will be taking a break. Tourist sites, rest areas, relatives, etc. If you put a number by that star, it can signal to give out a new snack or activity. I put my portions in paper bags with numbers on it, but this blogger combined the ideas. I packed enough for them to have a very small snack or activity for every hour.
This blogger packs border bags for crossing into a new state!
I’ll share even more of my fave ideas tomorrow!
We own three fans and one noise machine.
It helps each room of sleepers to crash easily and stay asleep even if Harley neighbor decides to start up their machine at 11:30 p.m. or the owls in a nearby tree decide to start a quartet. But it’s not so easy to travel with fans/noise machines. And I can’t pack those ahead of time if we’re leaving first thing in the morning.
So I finally researched apps that might do the job. If you check it out, start with the free apps because there are 2 promising ones. Many of the ‘fan noise’ apps are loops of fans but they didn’t edit out the click it makes each time the loop starts over – not very conducive to sleep!
Here are my faves:
This one lets you pick more than one sound and then mix it to the levels you want! Oh, and it’s FREE! There is one that costs money, but for as little as we travel this should do the job. It also has a timer and an alarm feature. Sweet!
If all you want is white noise, then iZZZ Free might be the app for you
If you need a fun, family game or didn’t bring a bedtime story with you, Mad Libs has a free app, and a paid one.
*Not affiliate with any of these apps. Also, you have to search for them because I didn’t link up the pics. Sorry! Just so glad these apps are here for me while traveling!
Our family uses dryer sheets, and even with coupons I hate the amount of money they cost! A fellow frugal shopper overheard me ahead in line bemoaning the rising costs to a friend. He told us that we could make the dryer sheets last 3 times as long if we cut them in thirds!
I’d previously heard you could just reuse the sheet a couple of times. He insisted that cutting them was the better method. If you reuse the sheet, most of the good it’ll do has already been used up. And after awhile, it becomes a fire risk. I can’t back this up with research but what he said made sense to me, at least.
I went home, chopped a bunch of them up, and hoped for the best.. Know what? We can’t tell a difference! I asked my friend if she tried it. She said she started with cutting them just in half and she can’t tell the difference.
Instant money saver! I have no idea why I hadn’t thought of that before. As an added bonus, apparently you should be putting a slip of these between blankets in the linen closet to keep them from smelly musty.
What do you think? Have you tried this before?
