In our on and off again series of Having People Over & Making Them Teach Us Stuff, something happened a few months ago that I’ve been wanting to share.
Some dear friends came over, except one of the dear friends (let’s call him Man of Mystery… nope, scratch that one because it’d look like MoM abbreviated. No, let’s call him… oh, I dunno… how about Stan the Man?)
Okay, so Stan the Man came over and started looking around at our new digs.
At first, he politely asked what we hoped to do with the place. He politely mentioned that we sure had a lot of white walls. Then, he politely asked what colors we liked the best. We gave out noncommittal answers.
Finally, he told us flat out that we needed color. “Let’s paint!” he declared. “What’s your style?”
The thing was… I loved color. I just didn’t know what to say. I told him that there was a wall that I wanted to hang Mike’s guitars on, and I was thinking about making it navy to match our couches. Stan the Man nodded then walked around and asked me again, “What’s your style?”
I still didn’t know. So I did what I always do when I don’t know… ask the internet. My decorating style could have been french, formal, vintage, or a word I didn’t know how to pronounce. The results said I was all of the above. Was my decorating personality traditional classic, contemporary, or country romantic? Again, I think I broke the quiz.
Stan the Man watched my unsure progress (and I think the glaring white walls were starting to burn his retinas) and said, “Just go see what you like!” He turned to his wife (let’s call her Damsel of Decorating… nope, scratch that because that makes me think of DoD, department of defense… so let’s just call her Marcy the Artsy).
Anyway, Stan the Man told Marcy the Artsy to take me, Heather the Hesitant, to Hobby Lobby to find my style.
So she did.
I said “Duh, have you met me? I still sing Disney fairytale songs when I think no one’s listening.”
She said, “No, I mean that’s your style. You’re a romantic.”
I said, “Oh.” and instantly felt embarrassed about revealing that little Disney tidbit.
But we got home and Stan the Man had pulled out all the guitars to look at their colors. Then he looked at my findings and sent his wife & I back to the store… because there was one color that would complement all the stuff I wanted/liked.
So he painted it on the wall for me! And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! So find your style before I put up Part 2!
Do you already know your style?
