Sometimes the best outlet for creative family fun is brainstorming and entering a contest! Here’s Mike’s idea and entry:

Operation S.M.O.R.E

For today’s Friday Flashback, I remember a fun activity we did in early fall when it starts getting dark earlier and a bit chillier…  Above you see Sam in his secret agent approved headgear.  They all wore headlights.

With their friends, they went on Operation S.M.O.R.E — So Many Outrageous Radical Eggs. I took plastic easter eggs and coated them with reflective tape and hid them in the playground.

Then, in the dark of the night, they were briefed on their mission.  Thankfully our agents were able to retrieve them and celebrate with, well, a S’more.

It was way fun, and I hope to have an opportunity to do it with a large group of kids… or adults.

First Day of Fall!!

Once upon a time (three months ago), a girl (mom) moved into a house that had weeds as tall as herself in the front.  She pulled them out then thought, “Huh. I’ll just put a seed there and see what happens.”

Her bag of seeds was a jumbled mess from a couple years prior but she randomly picked a seed and threw it in and continued to unpack.

Now, the one seed has traveled all along the side of the house and now wrapped around the front!  The girl would be quite embarrassed by her landscaping if she didn’t think growing pumpkins was so cool!

So for the first day of Fall, some planning must occur.  Did you know that a lot of sites offer pumpkin carving templates?!  Fun!

Like this Phineas pumpkin!

Feeling Punchy? National Punch Day!

Apparently punch came from India… initially called ‘panch,’ it was an alcoholic drink with some sugar, lemon, water, and tea added. I guess the sailors of the British East India Company enjoyed it and word got around (as around as it could get for the 1600s).

Now we have all sorts of punches available. My favorite?  This Raspberry Fizz Punch!  Check it out!

Today is also the original anniversary of the World’s Largest Chicken Dance, although I’ve heard this record has been broken many times since, either way… drink some punch and teach your kids how to do the chicken dance. After all, it is National Chicken Month and no child should grow up without doing the chicken dance at least once… although, this may be the punch talking.
