The EQUINOX, Elephants, and Ice Cream Cones

A weird list, I know!

Today is the Autumn Equinox which means a few things:

The Harvest Moon will be tonight (with the added addition of Jupiter being close by) and since the equator will intersect with our orbit around the sun, almost everywhere in the world (except the poles) will get approximately 12 hours of sunlight, and the sunset will be DUE WEST everywhere.  Which is pretty cool.

I’d like to test these scientific claims by letting the kids take the compass outside and seeing if the sunset really is due west.  BONUS:  They’ll love actually having a use for their compass too.

Since 1996 this day has been marked as Elephant Appreciation Day.  You’re just going to have to check out the site. They show you how to celebrate –my personal favorite is the elephant breakfast using egg, bacon, and pancake to make an elephant on your plate.

Today, in 1903, Italo Marchiony carted around New York serving lemon ice. He was inspired to develop a cone – first out of paper, then out of pastry, to dispense his lemon ice. Then he patented it.

Ah the ice cream cone.  I think we’ll honor his invention by having lemon ice! Try it with us!

Since my son needs gluten-free we might just have them in cones of paper to see how Marchiony came up with the idea.  But your family might want to honor it with real cones—not the cake cones, the waffle cones. YUM.
